The musical WONDERFUL TOWN premiered on Broadway in February of 1953. Leonard Bernstein composed a musical in just four weeks. Since then a handful of Wonderful Town recordings took place worldwide and Festival Lent is no exception.
In this musical, music is king. It’s the colourful and refreshingly breezy set of orchestrations that make it so distinctive from the other Broadway musicals of the era. The story is based on a series of autobiographical sketches that had appeared in The New Yorker magazine about two sisters from Ohio who come to New York in the 1930s from the mid-west to seek fame and fortune.
